The encoder strip for the HP DeskJet GT 5810 and 3325 is a semi-transparent plastic timing strip suspended across the entire length of the carriage path. It features thousands of microscopic vertical hash marks that an optical reader sensor on the back of the moving printhead assembly reads to track its precise position. If this strip is scratched, stained with ink, or deformed, the printer will completely lose track of the printhead, leading to misaligned print text, severe double-printing ghosting, or aggressive carriage slamming errors.
